how to update to 10.5.5 on amd

had some troubles installing leopard on my amd machine, but now it works great. maybe this can help somebody else.

my machine:
asus m2n mcp 61 motherboard
athlon 64 x2 5000+ cpu
geforce 8600 gt video card
usb mouse and keyboard

i first installed kalyway on a spare ata drive, and it worked ok. i got the nforceata found 0 units error, but it went on, and it worked.
after this test, i wanted to install leopard on my sata drive. i got the same error, but this time it did not went on.
this is how i solved it: i connected the dvd drive on an ata cable, and set it to master. i connected the sata hdd to sata 1, and this time it works, even though i still got the error with no device found.
it only works for me if the sata hdd is on sata 1.
i have other sata drives, and it does not matter where they are connected, as long as the one that i want to install osx on is connected to sata 1.

the kalyway install is very simple, and it's much faster fro me on the sata drive than on the ata drive, almost twice as fast.
be sure to click customize when asked, and tick amd patch number 1 and the drivers for your video card. leave the network cards drivers alone, especially don't install the one that is said to force detect the nvidia network card (forcedeth). i tried and got random kernel panics.
i wasn't able to use my onboard network adapter, so i just installed a realtek 8139 which is working out of the box.
the audio will work with he default options. the one on board is an adi 1988a, but it is detected as azalia audio. it will only give you stereo output, no spdif. i wish i knew a solution for this.
i plugged in a sweex usb audio adapter, and it works out of the box, even spdif.

ok, after the kalyway 10.5.2 install, it's time to upgrade. it will work just fine as it is, but why not use the latest and greatest?

go here: http://osx86.wikidot.com/en:software and download the amd software update (ASU)
use this to update your system. i found it easier to just do the 10.5.5 update. if you want, you can tick the "modify only" option in the bottom of the ASU window - this will download the 10.5.5 update and patch it for amd use. you can save it somewhere, if things go wrong and you need to reinstall, you don't have to download it again (it's a 600 mb file)

after this, just run the patched pkg. this will update your system to 10.5.5, but keep your existing kernel.

after this, you'll notice that your video card drivers do not work anymore - don't worry, it's easy to repair.
go here: http://nvinstaller.com/ and download the 9f23 installer. run it, choose your video card, reboot, and there you go, accelerated video.

after this, go here: http://code.google.com/p/xnu-dev/ , download the latest xnu kernel image, install it using the dmg image. this will also install the new system.kext.

for me all this worked, but i still had problems with usb. it wouldn't see my usb stick, and at sometimes after a reboot mousesteer wouldn't see my mouse. this happened also for other usb devices, which at random will not work after a reboot.
it was a very simple fix: in bios, just disable legacy usb. after this, usb worked fine, i can use my usb stick, and all usb devices just fine.
after disabling the usb legacy support, you won't be able to use your usb keyboard until the system boots up. you will not be able to press del during boot to enter setup for example. if you need to do this, use an ps2 keyboard.
a ps2 keyboard did not work for me in 10.5.5, but worked in 10.5.2.

to update this install to 10.5.6, just follow this thread:

well, that's it, enjoy your new mac
