Apple updates Java for 10.4 and 10.5 users

Apple has released Java updates for Tiger and Leopard. The updates "deliver improved reliability and compability for Java SE 6, J2SE 5.0 and J2SE 1.4.2 on Mac OS X 10.5.4 and later”

The Java updates also fix several security issue for OS X 10.5 and OS X 10.4 users. New security enhancements are offered, including protection against malicious applets from launching file://URLs. URL handling was improved to prevent an attacker from launching local files.

An error checking problem has also been fixed to prevent malicious websites from executing arbitrary, code and untrusted applets will now be prevented from obtaining elevated privileges. The previous version also capped the encryption strength to a limit of 128 bits. The default jurisdiction policy now allows for unlimited encryption strength. Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 2 is available as a free download from Apple.
