I apologize if this information is out of date but seeing no one has replied yet I thought I would at least try to help.

The problem with using other GFX strings is that you might have one that actually isn't your card due to someone posting the wrong card name or other screw ups.

I know that in the past trying to extract your own GFX string in 10.6 using tools would give you false information. Therefore many would install 10.5 to grab the correct one.

You may also want to look into graphics enabler. I found this post and looks like one reply shows both dvi and vga work with dvi adaptor on a Nvidia 260.
