OK; I've deleted the previous install and started from scratch; this time I used the nvidia chipset driver as well as the nvidia darwin driver.
The screen now sticks in a different place and I'm no longer getting "still waiting for root"; it does still seem to be the same problem though (the screen just freezes and the machine fails to complete the boot)
